Description
The records of this collection consist primarily of printed materials that include governing records, published sermons, programs, epehemera, original artwork and artifacts. Among the governing records are a few deeds and legal papers. Of particular interest are several published Church histories that were printed during various anniversaries. A November 9, 1941 sermon by Rev. Thomas S. Mutch offers a unique glimpse into the soul searching that occured within the congregation as the United States found itself on the verge of entering World War II. A typed insert written after the attack on Pearl Harbor the following month states, "this sermon was preached when conditions were very different from what they are today. With incredible suddeness we have passed from debate to action." Mutch continues, "Sacrifices will have to be made but we will make them gladly because all we hold dear is at stake." A small group of original artwork and artifacts collected by Emma Van Pelt provides a window into the Church's early days, including an illustration of the original building "drawn from ancient authentic and only semblance of the Church upon an Old Time Sampler". Also among the Van Pelt Collection are several oak pegs taken from the old steeple and what appears to be part of a small organ pipe.
